Reinvigorating the high street

Much of the property in central zone of the city centre is in private ownership, which means there is a big journey for us to go on to secure larger scale improvements in this area.

However, we have been leading on several projects to improve the environment, boost footfall and make it a more attractive place for retailers and other businesses.

Future High Streets

The government funded Future High Streets has minor improvements carried out in the northern part of Commercial Road.

The council was awarded funding for the work in the space between Crasswell Street and Lake Road. Changes include new seating, more planting, play equipment for children, new cycle stands, and a pavement graphic by local artist, Angela Chick following a successful competition run in conjunction with the council’s Safer Streets team. The team has also assisted in the sourcing and implementation of more CCTV in the area.

Portsmouth Pop Up

Portsmouth Pop Up

The Portsmouth Pop Up shop scheme enables local entrepreneurs and small businesses to trade in a high street location without the commitment or cost of a longer-term lease. As part of the scheme, businesses can apply to rent the pop-up shop in Cascades, in Portsmouth’s city centre for a minimum of 13 weeks giving them a chance to engage with customers and launch products and services.

The Portsmouth Pop Up shop scheme is a partnership between the council, Cascades and Flude.

City Market

Portsmouth City Market runs weekly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Commercial Road offering street food, gifts, clothing, hardware, flowers, and fresh produce.

A new team is  in place to look after markets across the city, and work is underway to refresh the current regular markets as part of a new 5-year action plan that aims to attract a wider range of traders and introduce speciality and event markets. Find out how to get a market pitch,

City Buildings

City Buildings Enterprise Centre

The new City Buildings Enterprise Centre offers space for 14 new offices and a co-working space in Commercial Road, on the former Job Centre and Playland sites.

Supporting small companies by providing lower rents for office space and the chance to share ideas with like-minded firms forms a major pillar of Portsmouth’s plan to help drive forward the local economy.
