Helping shape the city centre’s future

Planting your ideas for a greener city centre

We want to hear from as many people as possible, from residents and community groups to businesses and visitors. We want to understand people’s ideas and priorities for the city centre and listen to feedback on the outline proposals.

Throughout 2022 and 2023, we held pop-up sessions in the city centre to share plans, and also visited community groups, schools and businesses to talk about the ambitions for the area.

As the project progresses, we will hold public consultations as an opportunity for people to find out more about regeneration plans for the whole city centre, ask questions, and leave feedback.

Shaping our green space

The outline proposals for City Centre North include a large area of public green space at the heart of the development. This is a blank canvas, and we want to work with residents and community groups to shape the plans and future uses of this space.

In future, we’d like to run interactive workshops to gather ideas on what people would like to see. If you’d be interested in taking part in a workshop, or for the team to come along to a community group meetings or event, please get in touch – we’d love to have your input.

Previous consultations and engagement

18 March 2023 – Future High Streets consultation with Aspex Portsmouth

An interactive art workshop was led by an artist from Aspex Portsmouth to give you an opportunity to share your priorities and ideas for the area between Craswell Street and Charlotte Street on Commercial Road. These ideas were taken forward into the Future High Streets improvements plan.

29 October 2022 – City Centre North consultation

This event was held as an initial engagement, communicating changes coming to City Centre North, to understand people’s priorities for the area, and to inform them about future formal consultation on the planning proposals. The top five themes that emerged, in order of popularity were:

  • Nature/wildlife
  • Cafe culture
  • Safe cycling
  • Creative activities
  • Community space

4 February 2022: A greener city centre consultation

We wanted to know what YOU think about a greener city centre and we had some very positive and interesting conversations with a wide range of people.

The green-themed event focused on several council projects that are working towards a greener, more sustainable future for the city centre. As well as the city centre north project team colleagues from energy services, the South East Hampshire Rapid Transit scheme, green and healthy streets, waste and recycling, and public health team took part in the event.
